About Cinema Loro sa'e

Cinema Loro saé opened for its first season in August 2010,  and now in it's 8th year of screening across Timor Leste providing popular cinema in a relaxing family friendly environment.

Outdoor cinema provides for portability, affordability, large crowds and is well suited to balmy Timor evenings.  Making the most of Timor-Leste’s great public spaces, Cinema Loro saé will also enable local Timorese traders the opportunity to set up their stalls and to share their wares with cinema crowds.

Local opportunity, international flavour

Cinema Loro saé is established as a local Timorese company.  Government and community leaders have endorsed the establishment of Cinema Loro saé, which will train and employ local people to promote and operate the enterprise.  Cinema Loro saé screens from May to December for the Dry Season all across the Villages Timor Leste.

The film program is designed to appeal to the whole community with each of the nights having its own location and movie variety. Film distribution arrangements will enable films from around the world to be legally screened. 

Community content

Short films are shown before each feature – these may include educational, cultural, community and health messages along with local and international short films.  Stakeholders will be consulted and assistance provided to encourage participation in this element of the program, which presents an opportunity to encourage and promote local film making.

Expertise

Cinema Lorosa'e is an initiative of the independent cinema, Sun Theatre Yarraville in Melbourne, Australia. The cinema operator has a history of community enterprise and commitment. The redevelopment of the Sun Theatre became a focus for the Yarraville community and contributed to the development of a thriving cafe, restaurant and social scene.  This philosophy informs the development of Cinema Loro saé.
